Martha's Chapel Christian Church is a non-denominational church established in 1804 by Reverend James O' Kelly, a circuit riding minister. O' Kelly was a great missionary worker, and did a great deal of traveling in connection with his work. From a deed on record in Chatham County, we find that he bought from one John Scott an acre of land where Martha's Chapel Christian Church now stands.
Martha's Chapel was organized for promoting the worship of God through the reading and study of the Holy Bible as the revealed Word of God. The church provides regular opportunities for public worship, sustains the ordinances, doctrines and ethics as set forth in the New Testament, and channels its offering to that which we believe will further the objects and purposes of the church. The church also provides spiritual training aimed to equip each member for effective witnessing and winning souls to Jesus Christ.
At Martha's Chapel Church, we affirm our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and acknowledge the Bible as the inspired inerrant Word of God. We look to the Scriptures for the authority of our faith, and we practice our faith in Christ who inspired the early Christians to be obedient to God's call to go and be ministers for him. We acknowledge our responsibility as Christians to share the Gospel to the world, the community, and our neighborhoods.
This church recognizes the Bible as the significant rule of faith and practice, and holds that living in accordance of the teaching of Jesus Christ is the true test of fellowship. The following six principals are expressions of our faith:
The Holy Bible, our rule of faith and practice.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, the only Head of the Church and our only Saviour.
Christians, a sufficient name for Christ's followers.
Christian Character is the only test of Fellowship.
Individual interpretation is the right and priviledge of all Christians.
The union of all Followers of Christ, that they shall all be one even as Christ is one with the Father.
